Plans for Australia's largest mine almost a sure thing

Adani's Carmichael Mine looks set to go ahead, becoming the largest mine in Australia."

While the path has not been without hurdles, Adani's plans to build one of the world's largest coal mines in Queensland is almost certain. On March 15, the state parliament motioned the outstanding approvals as Adani reached a formal agreement with all landholders.

The new project will be a major booster for the Queensland economy.

Economic benefits from the project

The Carmichael coal mine will be situated in the Galilee Basin and is set to become Australia's biggest mine. According to Adani, the new project will provide a major boost to the Queensland economy as it is set to create more than 10,000 jobs as well as large tax and royalties contributions throughout the mine's development and operation.

But the recent court approval was bittersweet for Adani, which was found to have overstated the economic benefits. In fact, rather than 10,000 jobs, the court found that it would likely only create 1,206 jobs in Queensland. Further, the court queried how Adani had modelled its financial forecasts, concluding that Adani's asserted economic benefits were a stretch.

Even so, the development was still approved, with the more realistic forecasts still seen as worthwhile. Michael Roche, chief executive of the Queensland Resources Council, supports the project for these reasons.

"This is yet another milestone as [...] these important economic opportunities benefit all Queenslanders, not just those in the regions," said Mr Roche.

Environmental concerns a major setback

The $16.5 million project includes major infrastructure developments too, with a port and rail network required to support the project. However, several setbacks have extended the acceptance process to over two years, after it was conditionally approved back in August 2014.

At the time, the Environmental Minister Greg Hunt publicly announced that the decision to limit the operation was grounded in Australia's national environmental laws, stipulating 36 conditions that Adani had to meet before the project could commence.

The mine will be located near the Great Barrier Reef, causing concern for government and environmental activists alike.Located near the Great Barrier Reef, the project has caused concern for government and environmental activists.

Additionally, backlash from environmental activists has held up the mine's progress, largely due to its close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. Adani's stance is clear, as a press release mentions that such delays have unnecessarily slowed the significant economic growth in the Queensland and the wider nation that the mine will create.
