First gas transported from Surat Basin to Curtis Island

Australia prepares for resources boom"

The Queensland Curtis LNG (QCLNG) project has reached a significant milestone, with its owner the BG Group announcing the first gas has been transported away from the Surat Basin.

The gas was transported to Curtis Island, which is where the liquefaction terminal is located, and was made possible following a two-year project to lay more than 46,000 lengths of steel pipe.

Spanning 540km, the pipes are the longest large-diameter buried pipelines in Australia.

Chief executive of the BG Group Chris Finlayson explained it is a real achievement for the first gas to be received on Curtis Island just over three years after the project was sanctioned.

He continued: "Delivering this key milestone demonstrates the advanced stage of development at the world’s first coal seam gas to LNG project.

"We are now entering the final construction and commissioning phases, and we remain firmly on track to deliver first commercial LNG in the second half of 2014, as scheduled and within the $20.4 billion budget."

Mr Finlayson noted how a number of challenges had been faced along the way - and there are likely to be many more in the future.

The target for the transportation of gas was set last February, and the group is delighted it has been able to keep to the strict schedule.

Now the first gas has been received on Curtis Island, work can begin on the first of two liquefied natural gas production being developed by the BG Group through the QCLNG project.

Commissioning work for this next phase is expected to get underway during the first three months of the new year.
