US and China showcase leadership in anti-piracy

A dual drug seizure operation has recently been undertaken in the Red Sea, involving deployment of an RHIB and Seahawk helicopter."

Piracy is rampant in many parts of the globe, especially in the Gulf of Aden where smugglers attempt to transport illicit substances and other materials into the Middle East.

That's why countries commit naval vessels to the region, with the US, Australia, China, the UK and New Zealand rotating military ships in and out of the area throughout the year.

Of course, the crews onboard these ships take any opportunity to further anti-piracy skills by hosting training exercises - like US-China Counter-Piracy Exercise 15.

This effort, which took place earlier in December, involved the USS Sterett, a guided-missile destroyer, and ships from the China People's Liberation Army (Navy).

Captain Doug Stuffle, the commander of the US Navy Destroyer Squadron, explained the benefits of the effort.

"The exercise allows us to address our common regional and global interest. It helps both nations pursue a healthy, stable, reliable and continuous bilateral relationship," he said.

Exactly 700 participants took part in this exercise - certainly a substantial number of defence personnel. They practised search and seizure operations, boarding efforts and similar exercises.

Commanding officer of the Sterett, Commander Theodore Nunamaker, outlined how piracy is a massive issue across the globe.

"Modern-day piracy has a far-reaching economic impact. Although much of the world's population will never encounter piracy, it has an impact on everyone, by increasing the cost of goods that are being shipped from place to place," Commander Nunamaker said.

International collaboration in the Gulf of Aden and other areas across the globe is certainly the best way to achieve stability.
