Substance seizures continue in the Gulf of Aden

Personnel from the HMAS Darwin recently made a significant drug seisure in the Middle East."

Combined Task Force 150 (CTF 150) continues to cripple pirate activities in the Middle East, with the Australian warship HMAS Darwin making another drug seizure recently.

These activities are essential for the long-term health of the region, as pirates pose a threat to the valuable shipping lanes and fishing vessels in the area. Only by patrolling the Gulf of Aden can pirates be prevented from operating.

"Today we removed these drugs from potential terrorist funding networks and demonstrated the effectiveness of the coalition effort," said Commander Terry Morrison of the HMAS Darwin.

Each trafficking vessel stopped means less funding for terrorist groups operating in the Middle East, as the funds gained from drug distribution channel directly into weapons purchasing and training. The vigilance of defence forces in the area continues to limit group activities.

HMAS Darwin arrived in the region in early March, following an extensive voyage from Australia. The ship will remain at its station for some time as part of CTF 150, along with allied nations such as Canada, New Zealand and the United States.

Australia oversees CTF 150 operations, directing the operational efforts of allied vessels in the area. Seizures such as the one recently conducted are managed by Australian forces. Recently, the HMAS Darwin and a French ship collaborated to destroy 650 kilograms of cannabis resin.

"CTF 150 warships have intercepted over 12.5 tonnes of hashish, nearly three tonnes of heroin and several shipments of methamphetamine in the past 12 months," said Commodore Daryl Bates, Australian commander of CTF 150.

"These are not small amounts by anyone's standards and it is clear that the terrorist networks that these activities fund are feeling the effect of our success."
