Striving for gender equality in the DST Group

In Australia, significant advancements have been made to level the playing field for men and women across a range of industries. While true gender parity is unfortunately not a reality yet, key leaders are taking charge to bring about a fair workplace.

Women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) fields have a strong ally in their corner with Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE). The Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group has recently joined a SAGE pilot program to promote greater inclusion of women in the sector.

Making improvements in gender equality

Australian women face significant challenges in the workplace - especially when it comes to pay and opportunity. According to the Australian Human Rights Commission, women working full time receive 18.2 per cent lower wages than men each week. 

Only one-third of STEMM graduates in Australia are women.

When it comes to STEMM fields in particular, there is strong evidence of gender inequality. A report by the Office of the Chief Scientist found that two-thirds of STEMM graduates in Australia were men, while the proportion of women graduating in astronomy, engineering and physics was even lower.

In the defence sector, however, the situation is better - a Department of Defence report examined pay differences and found that women made 5.3 per cent less than their male colleagues. While there is still some work to do, the defence sector is making efforts when it comes to gender equality.

A new partnership for DST

With its unique, cross-disciplinary position, the DST Group is uniquely situated to enact meaningful change in STEMM gender equality. This, along with its efforts in that regard, underlies its selection to join the SAGE pilot - a program for accreditation and improvement for gender equality in STEMM fields.

"The SAGE initiative is closely aligned with our ongoing strategic initiative aimed at increasing the participation of women in our defence science and technology workforce through good practice in our recruitment, retention and promotion of women," said Dr Alex Zelinsky, chief defence scientist.

Recent DST Group initiatives for gender parity have included scholarships, research placements and cadetships - which, taken together, have resulted in 51 total sponsorships by the group.
