Royal Australian Navy celebrates new helicopter acquisition

Australian Defence Force holds ceremony to honour troops in Afghanistan"

The Royal Australian Navy recently accepted the first two MH-60R Seahawk Romeo maritime combat helicopters at an "In Service Date" ceremony in the US state of Florida, marking the next step for the defence engineering project.

The deliveries were the first two of 24 airframes that defence contractors Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin will deliver to the Defence Materiel Organisation. David Frost, commanding officer of NUSQN 725, said the helicopter is a major step up from the RAN's previous helicopter.

"The MH-60R is a potent maritime combat helicopter that will primarily be used in the Anti Submarine Warfare Role. The aircraft will also contribute to Navy’s anti-surface warfare role by providing an air-to-surface missile capability," said Commander Frost.

"Today is a proud day for our Squadron."

Commander Frost stated that in addition to receiving the first two aircraft, officers and sailors with NUSQN 725 are celebrating the work they've done to learn how to fly and maintain the new helicopters.

Commander Frost added since the RAN first integrated the Seahawks in its fleet in December, it has already started a graduated flying program. This training is based on the techniques, skills and military tactics Australian forces learned from training led by the US military.

Throughout 2014, the RAN plans to continue training in Florida before it brings the aircraft back to the Naval Air Station in Nowra, New South Wales. It expects the groups will arrive back in Australia by the end of 2014.

The RAN has several reasons to celebrate the delivery of the Seahawk. Both aircraft were delivered not only on budget, but even six months ahead of schedule.
