RAAF prepares for the future - C-17A get a new communication system

DSTO and Airbus will work closely together on a range of research and development projects related to defence technology."

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has recently added a sophisticated new satellite communication and imagery display system to its fleet of strategic transport aircraft, the C-17A Globemaster III.

The system, which will benefit both crew and passengers, was unveiled during the Jericho Dawn series of capability demonstrations in Canberra.

How does the system work?

Large screens in the C-17A streamed live full motion video from a Heron, a remotely piloted unmanned aircraft system, operating around 2,000 km away over Woomera Test Range in South Australia.

The C-17A has been fitted with new system as part of Plan Jericho.

The Distributed Ground Station Australia located at RAAF Edinburgh also received the live stream from the Heron. Air intelligence analysts performed the processing, exploitation and dissemination of the real-time video using the defence computer network.

The C-17A has been fitted with new system as part of Plan Jericho.

Director of Plan Jericho, Group Captain Robert Chipman, said that this was a great example of the how the Air Force, Army and Navy can operate together.

"The networks and systems demonstrated in Canberra today allow passengers in the aircraft to receive live updates and video of their destination, such as enemy positions or disaster damaged areas, right up to the point of insertion," he said.

How will the system help?

The primary purpose of installing the satellite communications and imagery display suite in the aircraft is to increase information available to passengers and crew. This is especially useful as the C-17A is also used as an airlifter.

What is Plan Jericho?

It is a long-term plan to equip the RAAF with the latest high technology systems that are going to be introduced over the next few years.

The new advanced satellite communication and imagery display system has been installed as part of Plan Jericho. The new system in C-17A aircraft has been installed as part of Plan Jericho.

The project is an all-encompassing initiative, which will focus on all aspects of the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) "operations and support systems, command and control, training, simulation, organisational structure, trade groups", according to the RAAF.
