RAAF Hercules challenged in Alaska

C-130 aircraft were dispatched to the Solomon Islands as part of a relief operation."

Two Royal Australian Air Force C-130J Hercules are currently operating in one of the hardest combat exercises in the world in Alaska.

Exercise Red Flag Alaska 14-2 is taking place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska until June 27. Other participating nations include the United States and Japan.

Australia is using two highly capable aircraft for the exercise, along with experienced crews.

"We'll be flying Hercules on tactical airlift missions as part of a wider group of aircraft that includes strike jets, fighters and surveillance aircraft," said Commanding Officer for No. 37 Squadron, Wing Commander Darren Goldie.

Red Flag exercises are some of the toughest in the world for military personnel, testing both crew training and aircraft capability. The recent upgrades to the C-130J will prove useful here, including the electronic warfare self-protection system. This is designed to thwart many of the new attack methods found on the modern battlefield.

"The training environment at Red Flag Alaska is one of the world's most complicated recreations of a modern battlespace, with simulated missiles, enemy radar systems, and 'aggressor' fighter jets," Commander Goldie explained.

The Hercules is one of the best aircraft for the job, having a long operational history with armed forces around the world. Australia has operated the C-130J variant since 1999, having used previous revisions of the aircraft since the Vietnam war. As a cargo and transport aircraft, the Hercules is unmatched. It's able to handle 20 tonnes of payload, or over 100 passengers.

The design of the aircraft also allows it to land on airfields with little to no infrastructure, and deliver paratroopers by parachute.
