Port of Rangoon next stop for Australian patrol ship

Australian Defence Force holds ceremony to honour troops in Afghanistan"

The Armidale Class patrol boat HMAS Childers has arrived in Bangladesh following a beneficial trip to the Port of Rangoon in Myanmar. Docking in Chittagong, the main seaport of the South Asian country, the patrol boat aims to improve ties between Australia and Bangladesh.

The HMAS Childers is a relatively new ship in the Australian Navy, having being built only recently in 2007. The ship class is primarily designed for border patrols, watching for customs breaches and unauthorised attempts to enter Australian waters. Another ship in the same class recently helped deter asylum seekers from Australian borders, showing the multi-rolled nature of the vessels.

Australia and Bangladesh are both dependant on the sea for trade and so rely on strong navies for maritime security, diplomacy and disaster relief, according to acting Minister for Defence Senator George Brandis. He went on to say that the naval visit to Bangladesh will increase understanding of operations between the two countries.

"Australia and Bangladesh have conducted some minor naval interaction during regional bilateral activities in the past, but this is the first time an Australian Navy ship has visited the country," said Mr Brandis.

"In addition to complementing vital logistical tasks, the port visit provides an opportunity for interaction between two active participants of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS)."

After the operation in Bangladesh has been completed, the HMAS Childers will make a long trip south to the Andaman Islands, west of Myanmar. The ship will then take part in a naval activity hosted by the Indian Navy. There will also be additional stops in other ports on the journey back to Australia.
