Navy Seahawk helicopter assists in police rescue operation

The Seahawk, a highly capable maritime surveillance platform, recently took part in a rescue operation in Victoria."

Australian defence forces are in the midst of several operations around the world, with some based on Australian shores.

The Royal Australian Navy has seen a large amount of activity in the past few weeks, with overseas deployments proceeding as planned and the search for missing flight MH-370 being undertaken in the Indian Ocean southwest of Perth. Another operation has also recently taken place, this time on the country's east coast.

A Navy helicopter from 816 Squadron was recently deployed to assist search-and-rescue efforts after a distress beacon was activated near Mallacoota, Victoria. As one of the most capable maritime aircraft available to the Navy, lending assistance was no issue.

With such a strong suite of surveillance equipment, the Seahawk is a natural choice for these types of missions.

"Shortly before 0100 a Navy Seahawk helicopter launched from 816 Squadron at Nowra to support the search-and-rescue activity," said Commanding Officer of 816 Squadron, Commander Marc Pavillard.

"The aircraft provided support to a police vessel which subsequently recovered four personnel from the water prior to safely returning them to Eden. After almost four hours of night flying to complete the operation, the Seahawk returned to Nowra at 0530 this morning."

Its long range capability and high flight time make the helicopter an extremely valuable asset for the Navy for a variety of missions. In addition to maritime surveillance and tracking, the helicopter is able to operate from a naval ship and ferry personnel from naval vessels to shore.

Over the course of this year, the Seahawk is certain to continue active involvement in rescue missions and overseas deployments as part of ongoing service. Currently, the aircraft are operating in the Middle East as part of Operation Slipper.
