Recently, China's defence force, the People's Liberation Army and Navy (PLA-N), took part in a military training exercise with the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The port visit took place from October 31 and concluded on November 2.

The visit included naval skills training and discussions surrounding both nations view on the Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea. However, it also extended to diplomatic activities such as official functions and sporting activities.

Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Tim Barrett, AO, CSC explains the strategic benefits to undertaking regular visits with Australia's defence partners such as China.

"The conduct of these activities between navies is the oldest form of international diplomacy and is fundamental in developing our understanding and cooperation between the RAN and the PLA-N," says Vice Admiral Barrett.

This aligns with similar defence initiatives of Australia's closest ally, New Zealand.

The New Zealand Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee undertook an official visit to Beijing in September, which included a speech to the National Defence University. Within the speech, Mr Brownlee noted the important role that maritime security plays to both nations.

"New Zealand is a maritime nation. And like China we rely heavily on free access to major shipping routes and sea lanes of communication for our own economic prosperity," stated Mr Brownlee in his speech.

Mr Brownlee stated the significance of the relationship to New Zealand and the importance of strong defence ties to regional issues. He also referenced key NZ defence aims such as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

"The New Zealand and China relationship is strong, and we are here today as true strategic partners," concluded Mr Brownlee.
