How Chinese submarine developments impact Australia

Replacement submarines are currently being considered to take over when the Coles class retires."

Naval warfare has changed significantly in the past 100 years, evolving from surface operations involving warships to complex, multi dimensional operations involving satellites, submarines and a complex array of support vessels.

Military hardware developments are continuing at a rapid pace as countries spend billions on exploring new technologies, vehicles and vessels. Chief among these are submarines, which are currently seeing development in a number of countries.

It will be important to understand the capabilities of Chinese submarines, especially over the next few years as Australia develops new vessels.

Chinese submarines are expanding in number as the country channels funding into military developments. Over the past 15 years, the number of vessels has grown substantially, including new diesel attack and nuclear ballistic submarines.

For Australia and other partners in the region, submarine investments will have to be carefully considered to ensure stability.

Australia currently operates six diesel-electric submarines called the Collins class. An ageing vessel, replacement studies are currently underway with new craft expected by 2030. By 2015, a new whitepaper is expected to be released, outlining the best practice for upgrading to a new fleet.

Whatever choice is made about the method of replacement of Australian submarines, vessels will be required as China continues to operate a larger number of the subsea craft. By neglecting to implement new vessels, Australia could see China gain a significant foothold in the South Pacific.
