Funding to skill the defence industry

Upskilling the defence industry means more capable maintenance of aircraft"

Retaining and upskilling skilled Australian workers for the defence industry is becoming increasingly important, and the latest funding round from the government reflects this.

The next round of funding for the Skilling Australia's Defence Industry (SADI) initiative was announced on May 26 by Minister for Defence, Senator David Johnston. This is good news for the defence industry, as rounds such as these are able to keep skills within the country.

The funds will total more than $5 million, and is set to become available to the industry in the 2014-15 financial year. Following this monetary boost and subsequent training, worker's skills should be substantially improved.

"The SADI program continues to boost Australia's defence industry skills base by enlarging the pool of qualified engineers, technicians, tradespeople and project managers," Senator Johnston said.

In addition to this, other measures were also being put in place to make defence operations substantially easier.

"I am particularly pleased to announce that additional flexibility is being introduced to the program to reduce red tape, improve efficiency and better target training to Defence's needs," he said.

"Grant recipients will be able to optimise their training outcomes by being able to self-select, prioritise and schedule their training from an approved list of eligible funded activities."

Minister Johnston explained that Australian defence companies would also be able to apply for funding support for skilled activities, taking place at any time during the 2014-15 financial year.

Skilled workers means far easier defence operations moving forward, as new vehicles and equipment can be easily maintained.

Additionally, the program is also set to continue supporting training opportunities in rural and regional Australia over the next financial year.
