Defence ties between Australia and China praised

Defence ties between Australia and China have taken a step forward."

Australia and China are making moves toward stronger defence ties, following a meeting between defence leaders from both countries. Stronger relations between the two countries should be expected, following the joint participation in the Rim of the Pacific Exercise in Hawaii.

For the first time this year, Chinese defence forces participated in the massive maritime operation along with numerous other countries.

At a meeting in Canberra on 17 July, Vice Chairman of the People's Republic of China Central Military Commission, General Fan Changlong, and Defence Minister David Johnston made efforts to forge a closer defence network, by conducting further joint military exercises.

These proposed undertakings would involve China, the United States and Australia. Exercise Kowari, the first, has already been planned, and will be held in October 2014 in northern Australia.

"Exercise Kowari [...] is a firm demonstration of all three countries' intent to work together towards enhancing mutual trust and regional stability," said Senator Johnston.

"The exercise will provide those taking part with an understanding of the basic principles, procedures, techniques and equipment that best support survival in a harsh environment."

Cooperation between China, Australia and the US is a significant step forward for international relations and could lead to closer ties over the next few years.

"General Fan and I also noted the vital importance of regional maritime security and we've agreed to discuss further how Australia and China can work closely to promote maritime security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region," Senator Johnston said.

For now, Exercise Kowari should serve as a valuable event for defence personnel to work together and share a variety of survival techniques.
