CDF Commander makes final visit to Afghanistan

C-130 aircraft were dispatched to the Solomon Islands as part of a relief operation."

General David Hurley, Chief of the Defence Force, has made his final operational visit to Afghanistan, before stepping down later this year.

General Hurley was flown to the region in a Royal Australian Air Force C-130J, landing at Kabul airport - one of the main bases of operations for international forces.

On arrival, he visited numerous areas around Kandahar and Kabul, where 400 Australian personnel are currently deployed in various operations. Most Australians are focused on training, advising and assisting the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).

General Hurley also visited personnel based at the Al Minhad Air Base, in the United Arab Emirates.

His retirement is set for July, following an extensive career in the Australian Army of over 40 years. Over the past four decades, he has been deployed to Somalia among other areas around the globe.

The General will leave with several awards, including a Distinguished Service Cross and Officer of the Order of Australia.

The US have also announced plans to begin shrinking troop numbers in Afghanistan, in what would seem to be a period of winding down. Over the next two years, the number will be reduced to around 10,000, consolidated in Kabul and Bagram Airfield.

In the time troops have been based in Afghanistan, the number of children enrolled in school has risen from 900,000 to 8 million, and 28 per cent of the population now have access to reliable electricity - up from 6 per cent in 2012.

Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin will take over duties in July, becoming the new chief.
