Australian Navy ship commences patrols in the Middle East

The HMAS Childers has returned to Darwin following an extensive naval voyage."

The HMAS Newcastle, which officially joined Operation MANITOU at the beginning of this month, has commenced her first patrol as part of the mission.

The Adelaide class guided missile frigate is on a six-month deployment. She will conduct maritime security operations in the Middle East covering an area of around 2.5 million square miles.

The ship's Commanding Officer, Commander Dominic MacNamara, RAN, said HMAS Newcastle will serve the purpose of maintaining maritime security and help with the region's overall stability.

"The ship's company are well trained for the operational challenges ahead as we build on the success of the previous Royal Australian Navy contributions to Combined Maritime Forces," he commented.

He added that Australia has a history of delivering promising results whether at sea or ashore and HMAS Newcastle will be "just as productive".

The family and friends of the crew onboard the vessel have lent their support which, Commander MacNamara said, is key to helping any mission succeed.

The mood onboard the HMAS Newcastle is positive and everyone is prepared for the "very dynamic operational environment".

According to the Department of Defence this is Newcastle's fifth deployment. It was last sent to the middle east region in 2013. The current mission represents the 60th rotation of a Royal Australian Navy ship to the region since the first Gulf War in 1990.

Prior to this HMAS Success had been deployed on Operation MANITOU.

The department says the deployment is "part of Australia's contribution to the international security and stability effort in the Middle East Region, which includes counter terrorism, counter piracy and narcotics interdiction".
