Australian Chief of Joint Operations changes

US Marines are set to arrive in the Northern Territory shortly, in order to use the region as a staging ground."

A changeover has recently taken place at the Headquarters Joint Operations Command (HQJOC), with Lieutenant General Ash Power retiring from the role of Chief of Joint Operations. Vice Admiral David Johnston will take over in his place.

The ceremony took place on May 19, with staff posted to HQJOC taking part in the event. General Ash Power received the pennant in front of the building near Canberra, and a new pennant was erected to signal the change of command.

Mr Johnston gave a speech at the ceremony, outlining his commitment to the role, and the future challenges he would face.

"I aim to use the experience I've gained and align it with all the experience of the people that work with us in the command and across Defence to make sure our people can be successful and safe."

"JOC is a really important organisation inside Defence that has done fantastic work over the last three years plus in assisting me to command operations," he said.

The continued safety of defence personnel was also a priority for Mr Johnston. This is certainly a necessity, given current deployments.

"Nothing is more important than looking after our deployed men and women and we've done that very well.

HQJOC is the operational level headquarters for the Australian Defence Forces, responsible for command and control of forces around the world. Based in Bungendore, the centre is a hub for the direction of air, naval and land forces .

Vice Admiral Johnston finished by explaining how the HQJOC was equipped to handle any future challenges, and thanked the work of defence staff.
