Australia gets set to to introduce an integrated civilian and military air traffic control system

a sophisticated system that integrates civil and military traffic control"

Australia has launched an initiative to create a sophisticated system that integrates civil and military traffic control.

OneSky will make Australia the first country in the world to use such an air traffic management system.

Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said Australia is moving to this new structure to improve the navigation and communication capacity of aircraft in Australian airspace.

"Once implemented, Airservices Australia and Defence will share technology and information, giving Australia the most advanced and integrated air traffic control system in the world," he said.

The project will be delivered in collaboration with Airservices Australia, the Department of Defence and Thales Australia. OneSky will replace the current system. The Australian Advanced Air Traffic System was first commissioned and developed in the late 90s for sole use by civilian air traffic.

What will OneSky deliver?

According to Mr Truss the system will help minimise delays for travellers because it will be capable of estimating as much as 60 per cent of growth in air traffic activity by 2030.

Minister for Defence Kevin Andrews said that unified civil and military air traffic management would strengthen infrastructure. Once operational, the system will allow controllers to better manage the varied aircraft in our airspace, creating a smooth flow of domestic and international air traffic.

"It will also ensure that Australian aviation remains at the forefront of technologically advanced air traffic management and safety, while optimising newer technologies on modern aircraft to drive greater efficiencies and seek opportunities to improve environmental outcomes," he said.

Next steps

OneSky will be introduced in phases from 2018 to 2021. According to a statement released by the Department of Defence, this move will lead to combined savings of several hundred million dollars. OneSky comes in at a rare time, when both civil and military systems are due for renewal.
