Australia and NZ reaffirm bilateral defence partnership

Australian Defence Force holds ceremony to honour troops in Afghanistan"

The Australian defence minister has met with his New Zealand counterpart to discuss their close bilateral defence partnership.

Senator David Johnson met with Dr Johnathan Coleman at the Australia-New Zealand Defence Ministers' meeting in Auckland, where both parties said they were keen to continue working alongside each other.

The ministers acknowledged progress had been made on enhancing collaboration, which has involved sharing experiences and innovation since the Defence Relationship Framework was formed in 2012.

However, they acknowledged there are still areas where further practical cooperation can be made.

Both ministers were involved in discussions over naval cooperation and the potential for further cross-crewing initiatives, as well as the continued importance of the Track 1.5 Security Dialogue.

Other areas of discussion included building on the existing agreement that saw New Zealand and Australia carrying out more than 700 different activities.

These included senior officer visits to exchange posts in Australia - in the new year, an Australian policy officer will be seconded to the New Zealand Ministry of Defence.

The annual meeting also provided the minister with an opportunity to discuss global and regional security issues, including recent developments in the Middle East.

They also discussed respective operations in Afghanistan, as well as the International Security Assistance Force mission as it enters into its final year.

News recently emerged that the Australian Defence Force had completed its mission in Uruzgan, although Senator Johnson said the country will remain committed to Afghanistan in 2014 and beyond.

It is estimated that over the past few years, more than 26,500 defence personnel have been deployed in the region in what Senator Johnson described as an "enormous logistical achievement".
