$707 million upgrade proposal goes to parliament

A $707 million funding requests for base upgrades has gone to parliament in anticipation of the arrival of Australia's new P-8A Poseidons."

A string of upgrade proposals for facilities at RAAF bases Edinburgh, Darwin, Pearce, Townsville and HMAS Stirling has gone to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works in anticipation of the arrival of new marine patrol aircraft.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence Darren Chester announced the development earlier this week, saying that the $707.9 million project was would support the eight P-8A Poseidon aircraft Australia is purchasing.

"Facilities will be developed at the Main Operating Base at RAAF Base Edinburgh, as well as works at Forward Operating Bases at RAAF Bases Darwin, Pearce and Townsville. The existing Torpedo Maintenance Facility at HMAS Stirling will also be refurbished and new Explosive Ordnance storage constructed," Mr Chester said. "These new and upgraded facilities and infrastructure are essential to the operation of the P-8A Poseidon aircraft."

The P-8A Poseidon is a long-distance surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft designed for use against submarines and surface vessels. It is able to drop sonobuouys (small, expendable sonar systems) and follow these up with torpedos, depth charges, air-launched cruise missiles and anti-ship missiles.

The Australian Government announced earlier this year that it would purchase eight P-8A Poseidon aircraft at a cost of approximately $4 billion (including support facilities), with an option to buy four more. Together with drone technology they will replace the current fleet of AP-3C Orions.

If approved by Parliament, construction would begin in 2015 and would be expected to be completed by late 2020.

"This investment will bring economic benefits for local industry across the country over five years, predominantly in South Australia and the Northern Territory," Mr Chester said.
